Changes to FBA Power — What Do They Mean to You?

Many of the readers of my book use FBA Power and FBA Scout in their businesses to scan, list and prepare shipments for Amazon’s FBA program.  Recently there have been a number of important changes at the company and upgrades to the technology of both products.  In addition, the name of the company has changed to Scan Power which has led to changes in links, products, groups, blogs, everything.

This blog post covers what you need to know if you use either of these products:

Why all the changes?

Scan Power is the new name of the company.  It better reflects what the company does (provides intelligence at the point of decision-making – the scan and pricing) and clears up confusion about the company’s relationship with Amazon.com.  Some people thought that the name “FBA Power” meant it was owned or in some way affiliated with Amazon when, in fact, it is a separate company that benefits sellers who use Amazon’s FBA program.

Scan Power also represents the direction the company is going. Many FBA sellers – like Scan Power CEO Chris Green himself – sell on other platforms, too, including eBay.  According to Chris, new programs and features are in the works that will support those who sell on eBay as well as FBA Power.

“It doesn’t matter what you sell, where you get it or where you sell it,” notes Green. “We want to help sellers be insanely efficient capturing arbitrage opportunities.”

What are the new links I need?

There are several new links you need to bookmark. The old ones with FBA Power will be going away!:

Your logins are the same as FBA Power. Currently it still says “FBA Power” in the corner of the screen when you login, but you can expect that to change.

ScanPower scouting: [mobile app updates are in the Google Play store.  I could not confirm the iTunes store at this time]

Make sure your version of FBA Scout is up-to-date to see the newest features. “Scan Power” will be available in both app stores shortly and you can switch. I found it in the Android store, but don’t know about the iPhone app store.

Not familiar with this product?  It is FREE with your subscription to Scan Power. It gives you tools to evaluate your inventory. It is brand new and I’m just looking at it myself.  More in a future blog post – but in the meantime, don’t hesitate to check it out for yourself.

What do I need to do for FBA Scout?

You need to make sure you have the latest version of FBA Scout from iTunes or the Android store.  In the very near future, “Scan Power” will be up there and you can download it (already on Android).  For now all the new features will be made to FBA Scout if you’ve been keeping that application updated.

What are the new features of Scan Power for my phone?

  • Scan History List. Ever wish you could go back and look again at an item you scanned without having to go find it an re-scan it?  All items scanned in a session are now available for easy recall.
  • Price capture – When you press the “Buy” button, you can now enter how many of the item you wish to buy and its cost.  When you upload your list to Scan Power, this data will be available to the other Scan Power applications including Scan Power and the repricer.  What does this mean for you? No more scrambling to look up prices on receipts weeks later when you want to reprice that item! And…fewer pricing mistakes.  When you are pricing the item in Scan Power later, it will act as a reminder of what you paid so you price appropriately.
  • Data comes at you faster – Do you get impatient waiting for data to come back to your phone sometimes?  Often that means that there are a lot of offers and it can take a while to pull all the data from Amazon. Now Scan Power will return data to your phone progressively which will speed up your decision-making process.  Frankly if I see 20 FBA offers or something high like that, I just move on. Rarely is the price worth it with that many competitors and now I don’t have to wait to see that early data.
  • CamelCamelCamel integration – If you are not familiar with this application, check it out! It allows you to track price histories on Amazon.com, Best Buy and NewEgg.com.  It is not only a great tool for customers (is that Barbie selling for a good price?), but for sellers too.  If you know that a particular item normally sells for $15 that helps you a lot when decided to buy and price that item for sale on Amazon.  The new FBA Scout will integrate with CamelCamelCamel so you can make these decisions at the store. By the way, I have no idea why it is called “CamelCamelCamel.” The logo makes me think of cigarettes.
  • Quantity in stock for FBA offers – Just like with Scan Power on your computer, you can see how many of those items your fellow FBA sellers have up at Amazon.
  • Report a problem – (Yellow exclamation point) button. This sends Scan Power all the information from your device about a problem plus your email and deviceID.

 What are the new features of Scan Power?

One of the most noticeable changes for Scan Power is the ability to write in what you paid for an item, your floor and your ceiling. What that means is if you paid $5 for an item, you can decide what your floor (lowest price you will sell it for) and ceiling will be in advance.

This is particularly important when using a repricer to reprice your inventory. As you have probably noticed, other sellers price their products strangely sometimes.  You may see baby pacifiers for $100 and books for $1.95 – both really horrible prices.  The last thing you want to do is reprice against crazies like this.  By setting your floor and ceiling in advance – along with what you actually paid – you can make much smarter decisions down the road when you are repricing.

You will see the places to enter your purchase price, “floor” and “ceiling” when you click on the price of an item.

By the way, for all my customers who are re-selling my book, I’m flattered by these high prices, but remember that Amazon is selling it new for less.

    I was just getting familiar and set up with FBA scout and Power, which I founded very challenging and time consuming even with your book on my side, a lot of the set up steps are not the same, starting from page 107 so I have to follow instructions as they were appearing during the set up. Now more changes, I have nothing about specially when they are for the better, the only thing is, that when time on hand is very limited, makes you wonder if I’ll will I be able to launch my business on time.
    Christmas is just around the corner hope I can have some merchandise in on time since 95% is toys.
    In reference to Camel, Camel, Camel my first perception was, being able to carry more weight

      Hi Margie,

      My perception is that Scan Power just gets better and better, but when you are still new and getting things set up, it can seem confusing. You still have plenty of time to take advantage of holiday sales. My first year I didn’t even buy my first toy until Dec 2. My friend Lynn set up her business in early November and had her first shipments up to Amazon in time for Black Friday. They key is to get stuff up to Amazon as quickly as possible. People are starting to buy for the holidays and will start in earnest right after Halloween so see if you can some merchandise up there before the end of October. That way you can make some sales and afford more inventory before the end of the holiday selling season.

    I heard that Amazon was blocking the info on the Quantities in Stock for the FBA offers. Is that true or is that info available again? The reason I ask is I recently canceled because that was the most valuable piece of info to me and if that wasn’t available I thought it wasn’t worth the monthly FBAScout fees. The rest of the info about the price other sellers are selling it for is available by using Amazon’s free app for iphone. Plus, I recently found out there is a new app called Profit Bandit that charges just a one time $15 cost for the iphone app and no monthly fee. I haven’t started using it yet, but it seems to have the same info.

      Janet,

      As of this morning all features are working on FBA Scout (I have Android, I don’t know about iPhone). I did have some issues last night with data being pulled and contacted the guys at Scan Power (info@scanpower.com) who fixed it for me.

      I use Scan Power because their products fit how I want to run my business and were the best option at the time I started my business. New software comes out all the time and I believe everyone’s business is different. What works for me may not work for you. I am not familiar with Profit Bandit and would be interested to know what you think.

    Hello, thank you for your blog and your book. You are so helpful! I just switched my Android App from FBAscout to Powerscan and it is working. But when I scan something, it doesn’t look any different than it did with FBAscout. Net payout is not a column on my screen. I just pay the $39.99/month for just the scouting, I don’t list through them- I just do it through Amazon for now. Is that why the net payout doesn’t come up or do I need to do something else. It would be a helpful tool when purchasing inventory. Thanks, Janna

      Janna,

      Your screen isn’t going to change much between FBA Scout and Scan Power as they are basically the same product right now. Scan Power Scout will have more features going forward. Scan Power Scout application is not drawing the “net” on my system either (written 10/29/12). I’ve informed the team at Scan Power and I know they are working on it. In the meantime, I’m using FBA Scout (which works great) so give that a try. If FBA Scout is still not drawing net figures for you, it is probably because you need to adjust your settings to show the net. Just click your settings and you’ll see an on/off box.

    Hi Cynthia,
    Still getting together my first box to send to Amazon FBA.
    Simple questions, like how do you physically pack the books in the box. I understand Amazon do not like bubble wrap or packing included. Do you pack the books to FBA spine upwards or on top of each other? How do you stop them from moving around in the box and getting damaged during transit?
    With such a variety of size and shape, this must be difficult?

      Thank you for your question on my blog. You may find a blog I wrote last year helpful to you when it comes to packing your box: http://onlinesalesstepbystep.com/pack-right/. It was a guest post from an actual Amazon warehouse worker.

      Basically, I pack them with the label showing up so it is easier for the warehouse guys to process my books. I pack as tightly as possible and then I use packing paper, plastic bags, air pillows, etc., to wedge into the holes so stuff doesn’t move around too much. Amazon’s rules about packing can be found through Seller Central’s “Help” function. Do a search for packing. I’d send you the link but it goes to the US Seller Central.

    Thanks for the all the awesome information, good to know there are still people out there that want to help other’s achieve success..

    I sell on amazon, Ebay and other sites.. People ask how to sell on amazon all the time, which i find way easier then Ebay and cheaper.. But if your trying to sell toys for the holidays, i tell people to start building their amazon buisness 6 months prior so there accounts will not be blocked in the toy section during the holidays due to restrictions.

    is scan power still going to show amazon ranking for items?

      Chris,

      FBA sellers do not need to worry about Amazon restrictions on toys over the holidays. They automatically are approved because Amazon is doing the fulfillment. My first year, I didn’t start selling toys until December.

      ScanPower does still show Amazon ranking for items. If you’ve not looked at their newest version, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much easier it is to use while still providing the great data we need to sell.
